Suriname
Suriname has been an active member of ILO since 24 February 1976, just three months after gaining independence in November 1975. Throughout the years, the country has benefited from ILO technical assistance and programmes targeting areas such as child labour, gender equality, small and sustainable enterprises, labour administration, labour law, and including more recently, a comprehensive review of the social protection system, training programme for farming cooperatives to achieve successful businesses, value chain development (focused on wood-processing and ecotourism), social dialogue and policy development, among others.
The tripartite partners in Suriname signalled their continued efforts to advance social justice and promote decent and productive opportunities for men and women with the signing of their third Decent Work Country Programme, 2023-26, which focuses on three priorities: Jobs, productivity, and sustainable growth; Livelihoods, human capital, and a skilled workforce; and Labour market governance and labour rights.
