Nicaragua
Nicaragua has been a member of the ILO from 1919 to 1938 and from 1957 to date. The country has ratified eight of the ten fundamental Conventions, two of the four governance Conventions, and 52 technical Conventions.
Nicaragua is one of the largest countries in Central America, with a land area of 130,373.47 km² and a population of 7,046,300 inhabitants (CEPALSTAT, 2023). Nicaragua's capital is Managua, but there are several other important cities such as León, Granada, Masaya, Rivas, and Estel. The country is divided into 15 departments, two autonomous regions and 153 municipalities.
In order to fulfill the mandate of promoting decent work and fostering social justice, the ILO provides technical assistance to its tripartite partners in the country - government, employers’ and workers’ organizations - through a team of experts and by the implementation of technical cooperation projects that address the priority challenges identified in the different areas of the labour field.
ILO actions in Nicaragua are coordinated from the Office for Central America, Haiti, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.
