Knowledge, attitudes and practices study on child labour in Yangon, Ayeyarwady Region and Mon State

The Knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) study on child labour was conducted in Yangon, Ayeyarwady Region, and Mon State to understand how different stakeholders perceive, respond to, and act upon child labour issues. The research aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of parents, children, employers, and community leaders regarding child labour, with the goal of informing future awareness-raising and intervention programs. The study was carried out using focus group discussions (FGDs), key informant interviews (KIIs), and surveys, with a strong emphasis on identifying the social, economic, and legal factors contributing to child labour in Myanmar.

The findings reveal that child labour is deeply rooted in poverty, social norms, and lack of educational opportunities. Many parents believe child labour is necessary for household survival, and children often see working as a family duty. The study also found low awareness about the risks and long-term consequences of child labour, especially among parents of child labourers. Additionally, child workers frequently experience hazardous working conditions, long hours, and emotional and physical fatigue. The gender dimension was also highlighted, with girls often working in domestic settings while boys engage in physically demanding jobs.

To address these challenges, the report recommends multi-level interventions, including community awareness campaigns, improved access to education and vocational training, and stronger law enforcement to protect children from hazardous work. It also calls for economic support for vulnerable families, the establishment of a Child Labour Monitoring System, and collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and international organizations. The study emphasizes the need for a holistic and sustained approach to eliminate child labour and improve children's well-being in Myanmar.
