SSE: Rural economy
The ILO considers cooperatives as instrumental in providing opportunities for productive and decent employment and improving the living and working conditions of women and men in rural areas. Cooperatives can play an important role in the promotion of rural entrepreneurship, business development and employment creation. They provide basic services as well as social protection in rural areas. Cooperatives are often considered as schools of democracy, promoting representation and voice for rural producers and workers, including those in the informal economy.
