Promoting safe and healthy working environments for all

Global Ratification Campaign on C155 and C187

The Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No. 155) and the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187) have been recognized as fundamental Conventions, requiring all ILO members to respect, promote and realize their principles.

They are fully complementary and reflect the relevant principles, roles and responsibilities for ensuring a safe and healthy working environment.

Ratifying Conventions Nos. 155 and 187 demonstrates a country’s commitment to a safe and healthy working environment, integrating their principles into law and practice. While ratification does not require immediate full compliance, it signifies a commitment to progressively align national frameworks with these OSH standards.

Ratification process step by step

Ratification does not require full compliance at the outset but signifies a commitment to progressively align national frameworks with the standards. While each country follows its own ratification process, this factsheet outlines key common stages and best practices.
