Analytical report
Assessment of value chains in pilot areas of the Myanmar programme on the elimination of child labour (My-PEC) in Ayeyarwady Region, Yangon Region , and Mon State
This study explores ways to create sustainable economic opportunities by identifying value chains that can help people earn a stable income. It looks at market trends, job opportunities, and the challenges people face in finding employment. Based on these findings, the study provides useful recommendations on how to improve livelihoods and develop vocational training programs. The goal is to help individuals and businesses grow, ensuring long-term economic success and better job opportunities for communities.
The study on value chains in Myanmar, highlights key economic activities in Ayeyarwady, Mon, and Yangon that could create sustainable livelihoods and reduce child labour. It identifies promising value chains such as rice, dried shrimp, and mud crab in Ayeyarwady; rubber, durian, and betel nut in Mon; and pig farming, street food, and home-based enterprises in Yangon. However, several challenges hinder growth, including limited financial access, outdated infrastructure, and low productivity due to traditional practices. Additionally, child labour remains a concern, with 61% of working children engaged in agriculture, often performing hazardous tasks. The report also notes a decline in agricultural employment from 2017 to 2022, with more people shifting to retail and wholesale trade, emphasizing the need for targeted support for youth and women in rural areas.
To address these challenges, the study recommends enhancing technical and vocational training, particularly for youth and women, and improving financial access through microfinance and value chain financing. Infrastructure upgrades, such as modernizing storage, milling, and transport facilities, are essential for boosting productivity. Strengthening market linkages through better international connections and marketing platforms can create new economic opportunities. The study also highlights the importance of gender-inclusive programs and stronger policy enforcement to support business development and child labour regulations. By implementing these measures, My-PEC can foster local economic growth, improve livelihoods, and contribute to the long-term elimination of child labour in Myanmar.
